Spud hits the nail on its head...

Today, Andy Furillo provides rare insight into the inner workings of the Spud-mind. As you know, our clueless leader is facing receivership of medical services and a potential contempt decree. Responding to questions about his inability to, say, get a scrub-sink installed in an infirmary, Spud revealed a rare moment of clarity:

"I think we've been trying for a long time, and we haven't met the court's satisfaction as of this time," Hickman said. "But I think there are some things that are obstacles to achieving compliance. I think we have to figure out exactly what those obstacles are and fashion a remedy that gets those obstacles out of the way."

Paco finds it of interest that Spud was able to approve a 6 figure purchase of furniture for his new suite at 1515 S yet was not able to get a sink installed in San Quentin's infirmary. It's too bad the PIA-made credenza-hutch combination he bought didn't include a mirror--without one, Spud will NEVER "figure out exactly what those obstacles are..."

In an instance of remarkable clarity, demonstrating quite clearly the old adage that even a broken clock is right twice a day, Secretary Hickman acknowledges the DORC health care delivery system was broken because the Department let it get broken, and further acknowledges that it is still broken because the Department has not taken the time or trouble to fix it. If that isn't inspired leadership, I don't know what is.

Mr. Furillo again demonstrates that he is one of the few people in the mainstream media that has any interest in fair, non-sensationalist reporting of problems within the prison system. Secretary Hickman's administration admitted explicitly that the Department has a thoroughly buggered up the health care system for the criminals. The secretary also strongly implies that his administration is incapable of fixing the problem and semi-invites the feds to do it. I commend the Secretary for admitting a reality that is staring DORC right in the face, and has been for some time. I am also moderately surprised that he has more-or-less admitted his inability to fix the problem. I do, however, feel compelled to point out that the taxpayers of the state of California are paying him a healthy salary to do a job. Dare I suggest it would be more appropriate for him to actually do it, or at least go down swinging, rather than urinating on his shoes and acquiescing in advance to a federal takeover? He may very well be incompetent to do his job. If that is so (and many of us think it is) and even he admits he, isn't it time for him to go bye-bye and turn his nice newly redecorated office over to someone with the ability to actually do the job they are being paid for? Just a thought.

So, the Secretary can't identify the problems. The vice-chair of the medical care review committee has his license suspended for incompetence and the Secretary can't figure out the problem. almost 20% of DORC's doctors have had actions taken against their license, and the Secretary can't identify the problem. Almost 5% of DORC's doctors have been placed on probation, and the Secretary can't figure out what the problem is. Anybody remember the comic strip Pogo? "We have met the enemy, and he is us."

i know pre-post mortems on hickman are a dime a dozen but this really is the last straw isn't it? how much more stupid can he look before the governor has had enough? surely he can find another kindred spirit (self-gazing, body-builder, steroid consumer) to bs with? i happen to know a number of folks who are in hickman's car (or thought they were or were thought by others to be) and they are distancing themselfs from him big time. the rats are leaving the ship and thats my theory of how he manages to stay afloat: more rats jumping off than water leaking in!
