I feel privileged to live here. I know the U.S. is not a perfect place. The President, however, is much more skilled than I am at pointing out our faults and apologizing for them, he does it often enough and in enough places around the world. I will therefore dwell on some of the more positive aspects of life here.
We have provided opportunity for a great many people from a great many places in the world. Our sons (and now daughters) have fought and died around the world in places where we had no strategic interest (i.e. Kosovo) but were only interested in doing the right thing.
Our private citizens gave more money to the relief of the Christmas Tsunami in S. E. Asia than did the governments who talk smack about the U.S. and it's people.
We are the most tolerant, open, caring and forgiving bunch of people on the face of the planet. For that, we are attacked by social and religious fanatics who hate us for our tolerance and openness.
America isn't perfect, but ask yourself this. How many people risk their lives trying to sneak into North Korea, or Iraq, or France, or Canada, or Mexico? (Pretty much none.) How many people in the world would consider living in poverty in this country to be an unthinkable improvement on their current status? (Tens of millions.)
Our system of government, Representative Democracy, works pretty well. The franchise has expanded greatly over our history, almost everybody gets a say in how things are run (sometimes to our detriment I think). We have had a few rogues and charlatans in power, but we have survived them and continued on, the stronger for it. We have recognized and acknowledged our faults, maybe slowly, but we have done so. We have been forgiving and even generous to our enemies (i.e. the Marshall Plan) and loyal to our friends.
All things considered, I can't think of anyplace I would rather live. I am proud to say I am an AMERICAN. The colors are flying outside my house today. How about yours?

A fine post Bob.
Amen! Amen Bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the flag reminder. Flying gloriously now. TEA party march this afternoon!
One must remember that some things should not be tolerated. i.e. homosexulaity, abortion, sin in general! And No America isn't perfect, but it's the best nation the globe has to offer.
I view our current status with the California governor, and the imposter in the white house, as "We are screwed".
As far as the 4th of July goes, I don't really see much to celebrate about, but I encourage people to still go out with their families and watch fireworks, eat and have a good time.
Take care, God bless you!, and have a safe shift~
Dear Wrestling Reporter, I hate to disagree with you, and thereby seem disagreeable on such a nice day, but I fear I must.
I have no problem with the idea of opposing "evil". "Evil" and "sin" are not the same, at least to me. Sin often has a very personal and/or religious definition. Evil is more of a social thing.
I am a practicing Pagan. I have no personal or religious hassle with homosexuality. I don't quite UNDERSTAND it, but I have no hassle with it.
I believe that if you don't want an abortion, you shouldn't have one.
I am a great believer in "Thou shalt not murder". Not so much in "Thou shalt not kill". (Which do you think is the correct translation of the original Hebrew from the old testatment?)
You have a nice day never the less. Obviously we have a few things we disagree on. Many more things we agree on I expect.
HAVE A GREAT 4TH OF JULY.
I'm on the same page with you, Bob. That being said, some of the greatest things about our country is our freedom of religion, (and to be free from oppressive religion) freedom of choice, and freedom of speech. Thank the powers that be for those things, as they give us the ability to peaceably disagree! Stay safe and have a great Independence Day!
A friend of mine sent me his doubled edge feelings today and I wanted to share them as I feel the same way. He said it much more eloquently than I would have.
"Because of the takeover of the Obama Cartel in February with all his different appointed Czars that can bypass Congress and the people of this nation, the government now controls all banking, insurance, mortgage loans, oil, the auto industry, the military and with this Cap and Spend bill they will control the type of home we live in and the fines related to your home not being politically left and “green”. Global Warming is a farce and proved to be by scientist not on a special interest payroll. I won’t even get into the Socialism Healthcare system they are trying to create because it make me mad enough to #$%^&*@!#$%^&^%$#@. This scumbag president is a fraud and a liar.
I shed a tear today for all the great Men and Women who have fought long and hard since our Constitution was created to gain our Independence and how quickly this Muslim is taking it all away along with his Cartel Czars and his way left Congress and Senate are ripping us of our individual right and freedoms.
I hope the politically uneducated sheep are happy with your vote and a
“Happy Independence Day!”
Because very soon it will be your last."
So there you have it. Personally as a veteran, I feel I paid my dues to help keep the things our forefathers shed their blood for intact. Amazing how hundreds of years of sacrifice can be undone in less than a year.
Bill, I have only one quarrel with your take on this. There is no real reason to believe that Barry is, or has ever been, a muslim. The reason given for him being so identified while a child in Indonesia is, I believe, reasonable.
There is plenty of stuff to hammer him on that is 100% solid that I feel nervous about hammering him on something that is (IMHO) probably bogus. His own long-term association with a vicious racist and anti-semitic pastor in Chicago is much more of an issue (to me) than his dubious connection with Islam.
Never the less, I like the way you think. Happy 4th of July back at you, with hopes that it isn't our last.
You are correct Bob. I think one of the most annoying things is the birth certificate issue. If he truly was an American citizen, why does he not present it and be done with the controversy. McCain had no problem providing his. From experience, when someone refuses to provide irrefutable proof about something, it doesn't pass the stink test.
Have a great day.
Now I am off to play BBQ cook. Oh joy Lol
I admit I am irritated by that myself. When someone tries very, very hard to hide something you are inclined ot think that he has something to hide. It might not be what we think it is, but it's probably something.
While today (yesterday at this point) was a day of celebration at least suppose to be. I lost a friend today. He died at about 0430 on July 4th, 2009. He is a Parole Agent and he will be missed.
Jeff or Bob... I don't know if it's appropriate to mention his name. But I do want people that we lost a hell of a nice guy and Parole Agent today. To all those idiots that talk shit about us a peace officers you can go to hell. We earn every single % point in regards to salary and pension.
My friend will be missed. Let me know if it's appropriate to mention his name or not.
Wrestling reporter and Bill
You guys don't seem to have a clue as to what the Fourth is all about.
Independence Day is exactly that, a celebration of the birth of our country. It's not about politics or religion, although thanks to our founding fathers we are free to practice both.
While I am not happy with the Obama administration, I don't think the country is going to hell in a handbasked like you guys seem to think. We may be in for some unpleasant times, but in the end, the good old USA will survive.
As an immigrant and WWII veteran, I have a deep appreciation for our beloved country. I fly old glory 24/7 because I celebrate America each and every day.
So please leave your personal grievances out for this day and enjoy it for what it is.
God Bless America.
Amen
Old Glory flies proudly at my home also 24/7. Happy 4th!
