Honors Student Killing Probably Collateral Damage.

Police now believe that the shooting of a Wilson High honors student in Long Beach was collateral damage from a gang shootout.

Melody Ross, who was also a track athlete, was shot down as she and some friends were leaving a football game. The shooting occurred in a crowd of people outside Long Beach High School near Ximeno Ave and 10th Street about 10 PM last Friday.

Two unnamed gang members were arrested in connection with the shooting.

The no-snitch culture, even in the relatively affluent area of Long Beach made it difficult for the police to get information even though there were dozens of witnesses to the shooting. On Monday, after the urging of school officials, some information was finally forthcoming.

Two men, 18 year old and 20 year old, were wounded in the shooting.
